Commonwealth Essay

Earth is only known planet in the Solar system that can sustain life. It has many wondrous things, like animals, and geographical wonders. However, it is being corrupted by selfish people who do not care for the future of this planet. The earth is slowly moving towards the path of destruction due to our actions, like recklessly burning trees and polluting the environment. The latest and most severe problem, is climate change, also known as Global Warming, or Greenhouse Effect.

When sunlight shines on the earth, some of it is reflected back, while some of it enters the atmosphere and heats up the earth. Due to the abundance of chlorofluorocarbon emitted by past human activities, the ozone layer, which acts like the shield that protects us from UV rays, is slowly being damaged. The damage in the ozone layer results in the inability of the ozone layer to reflect much of the suns rays, thus allowing more heat to enter. Many organizations have been created to try to keep the earth “green” and reduce the amount of damaged done by humans, but as chlorofluorocarbons have a lifespan of 20 to 100 years, they will continue to destroy the ozone layer. A very large hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica had been spotted by British scientists in 1985. Many people may wonder why the hole is there, when there are hardly any people in the Antarctica. Actually, the reason is that there exists a unique condition in Antarctica that accelerates the depletion of the ozone layer.

Every winter, a swirling mass of cold air is formed, and as there is no sun during Artic Winters, the air becomes freezing cold and ice clouds are formed. In spring, when the sun shines again, Light reacts chemically with the gas in the air to form chlorine. When the ozone excessively tries to destroy the chlorine, much of the ozone layer is then depleted. Now, with the increasing temperature, large chunks or ice are being melted, and are increasing the water level of the ocean. Many pests like mosquitoes and flies are reproducing at a faster rate than before, and diseases like dengue and malaria are being spread swiftly. Soon, the earth will no longer be suitable for us humans to live on, and we may be wiped off the face of this planet.

Although much work has been done, like the creating of “green” cars, tree planting day, and the reduce of plastic bag usage, but what I feel is, that our future seems bleak, and global warming is the consequence, a price that we have to pay for all our actions, like the flood in Noah’s Ark where the whole earth was drowned in a flood. Although what we humans have done have created a major climate change which in turn will slowly lead to our downfall , if we all work hard together to make up for what we have done and reduce global warming, we may just be able to avert this major crisis for humans.

A Perculiar Recount

Previously, we had the Sec 1 Orientation for Air Rifle. It started at 1:30 pm sharp, and we were briefed on what we had to do. I was posted on the most boring job of all.....measuring their fingers. After about 1 hour, i went for my break to eat a snack then came back up at about 2:45.When i came back, I saw that the next "wave" of sec ones had already arrived, and were already being briefed by our coach from Home Team NS.

I quickly returned o my post and started to measure their fingers again. While i was measuring the sec 1's lengthy fingers, another Air Rifle member apparently brought his girlfriends to school for what reason, I’m not too sure. However there is one thing that i am clear about, that my seniors were not happy about this. As a result, he was banned from entering the Rifle Range for a period of time, effective immediately.

Well, he deserved it. Why did he do that anyway? Well afterwards at 6:15 pm, we were debriefed and we all went home. I hope he can return to the air rifle range again and start training, so that i can have more teammates and competitors

recount on 15/1/08

Today, in school, during science period, Mr. Koh, my Physics teacher, brought us to the Science lab to do an experiment on refraction. Refraction is the bending of light due to a decrease in the speed of light. This usually happens in things like black holes, or water.

When we reached the science lab, he told us to sit in front of his table while we listen to his lengthy explanations. After the explanation, he told us to return to out tables and do the experiment ourselves. When I first did the experiment, I made a lot of mistakes, like accidentally placing the pin in the wrong position and dropping the large piece of glass but luckily I had Mr. Koh and my classmates to teach me the proper way of doing the experiment. It was fun, playing with those nails and that large piece of glass, especially when we side-tracked and tried to balance the glass with the 8 nails we had.

After i finished, I asked Mr. Koh if it was acceptable, he said it was, and he even commented that some of our work were better than the sec 3s. However, i had forgotten to label a part of my diagram with letters, so I didn’t manage to get 2 extra marks, only one. The experiment was very fun; I hope that i can do it again.

Blog Experience

Internet. This is a word that many people know very well. It has well become an important part of our lives, and we almost cannot do without it. Part of this internet is something that has taken the 21 century by storm, called blogging. A blog is a personal website or a diary, which is published online and can be read by everyone. The first time I made a blog, was in primary school, and introduced by a friend of mine. It can allow you to say things that you want to, without any constraints.

When I was making my blog, I wrote about all the things that happened to me in my school and at home, but I lost interest and decided to erase it. Currently, this is my 3rd blog, and I started it when Ms Neo, my English teacher, brought us to the IT Lab. Well, she had quite a bit of problem when bringing us into the lab, as our class is slightly...."hyperactive". Over the last year, I have learnt a great deal of HTML from Colin , and from the internet, so I intend to implement what i have learnt on this new blog, like making a skin of my own. I hope that i can make it the best of all my blogs.
